INS Khukri (F-149) was a Khukri-class missile corvette of the Indian Navy, commissioned on 23 August 1989. Named after the traditional Nepali dagger, Khukri, this ship was a symbol of India's naval prowess and modernization efforts. It was equipped with advanced weaponry, including Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Guns, Anti-Aircraft Shoulder Launched Missiles, and Close-in Weapon Systems. CAPTAIN MAHENDRA NATH MULLA, MVC (15 May 1926 – 9 December 1971) was an illustrious officer of the Indian Navy. He is remembered for his extraordinary courage and self-sacrifice during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. As the Commanding Officer of INS Khukri, he made the ultimate sacrifice by choosing to go down with his ship rather than abandon it. His bravery and leadership during the sinking of the ship have left an indelible mark on Indian naval history.
On 9 December 1971, during the Indo-Pakistani War, INS Khukri was struck by torpedoes launched by the Pakistani submarine Hangor off the coast of Diu, Gujarat. This tragic event resulted in the sinking of the ship, marking the first time since World War II that a submarine had sunk a warship in action. The loss of INS Khukri was a significant blow to the Indian Navy, but it also highlighted the valor and commitment of its crew, led by Captain Mulla.
