History of INS Khukri F-149

Indian Naval Ship Khukri was commissioned at Mumbai on 23 Aug 1989 by Shri KC Pant, then Hon Raksha Mantri and Mrs. Sudha Mulla, wife of late Capt MN Mulla, MVC. INS Khukri is the first ship of the Khukri Class Missile Corvettes. The ship's formidable arsenal includes four Surface to Surface Missiles, a Medium Range Gun, Anti Aircraft Shoulder Launched Missiles and Close-in Weapon System. The aviation element includes operation capability for the Chetak Helicopter and Advanced Light Helicopter.

CAPTAIN MAHENDRA NATH MULLA, MVC (15 May 1926 – 9 December 1971) was an officer of the Indian Navy. As the Commanding Officer of INS Khukri, he chose to go down with his ship when his ship was sunk during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

INS Khukri was a Type 14 (Blackwood-class) frigate of the Indian Navy. She was sunk off the coast of Diu, Gujarat, India by the Pakistan Navy Daphné-class submarine Hangor on 9 December 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. This was the first warship sunk in action by a submarine since World War II. Readmore

Decommissioned Khukri Handed over to Diu Administration

INS Khukri (P49), the first indigenously built missile corvette of Indian Navy, was handed over to the Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (DNHDD) Administration on 26 January 2022. In an elegantly conducted but solemn ceremony held at the INS Khukri Memorial, Diu, Rear Admiral Ajay Vinay Bhave, Flag Officer Doctrine and Concepts, handed over the decommissioned ship formally to Shri Praful Patel, Hon'ble Administrator of the Union Territory of DNHDD & Lakshadweep. The event included an enthralling performance by the Indian Navy Band and the illumination of naval ships at anchorage.

She has more than 32 glorious years of service to the nation and has participated in all forms of naval operations, the ship was decommissioned in a solemn ceremony on 23 December 2021.

A ship never dies, it is said. She is re-born in a new avatar. In fact, the decommissioned vessel is the second ship of the Navy to carry the name INS Khukri, the first having been lost during the 1971 Indo-Pak War off the coast of Diu. The valiant crew of that ship, led by late Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla (MVC), has been immortalized in the Khukri Memorial at Diu where a scaled-down model of their old ship is displayed in solemn splendor.
